Never underestimate the importance of mental health in horses. Just like other animals, they require the ability to express their natural behaviors, including stretching their legs, grazing for forage, and interacting with herd mates (except, of course, when medical conditions preclude these activities). If horses aren’t allowed to be, well, horses, behavioral and medical conditions can develop, including stress-induced gastric ulcers and stereotypies like cribbing or stall weaving.
