Dr. Nelson has extensive equine experience as a rider, owner, competitor, trainer, and veterinarian. She grew up in southwest Missouri & was introduced to horses at a young age. After completing her undergraduate degree at Drury University, Dr. Nelson attended the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine. While at vet school, she was heavily involved with the student chapter of the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP), & worked extensively on several research projects (characterizing patterns of equine lameness & investigating the link between gastrointestinal hormones & laminitis). She received numerous accolades for her studies, including recognition from the Phi Z eta Veterinary Honor Society, the AAEP Foundation, the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine, & the American Quarter Horse Foundation.
Following graduation, Dr. Nelson completed an internship at Wilhite & Frees Equine Hospital, a primary care & surgical referral clinic near Kansas City. Here, she practiced everything from routine preventative care to advanced lameness diagnosis & rehabilitation, infectious disease control & treatment, reproductive management, internal medicine, emergency care, and more.
With a practice philosophy that puts the patient first, Dr. Nelson is excited to work with horses & owners in the St. Louis area. When she isn’t working, she enjoys music, writing, creating artwork, & spending time with her four horses, Brandy, Buddy, Bones, Rebel and her cat Ophelia.
